An indication of how serious it is becoming is the fact that the no less an organ than the <a href="http://www.lawgazette.co.uk/opinion/comment/moj-must-address-chaos" title="MoJ must address..." target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Law Society's Gazette</a> is giving a platform to Madeleine Lee, director of the Professional Interpreters’ Alliance. The most telling comment is "<em>Interpreters and translators don’t like to be viewed as people requiring a ‘solution’</em>." You would have thought that a body like the MoJ would have gone out of its way to be politically correct and discussed this change with the 'stakeholders'.

I have to say that, with all due respect to ALS, they do seem to have taken a punt on this without really tying down the supply side. Unfortunately technology and MT cannot really ride to the rescue either, this is a case where humans are required.

I am still left wondering why ALS are not active in doing something to counteract the negative publicity? Some humble pie and reaching out to the interpreter community would not go amiss - something other than a vacuum. A job for Max Clifford?

Great post Gordon…

I’d add that as a guy who runs a service business the #1 thing is to supply your client with the service. Not being able to supply the service because you can’t find people who will work at the rate that you set in order to deliver profits is no one’s fault but your own. It means the business model doesn’t work (I could sell you translation at 2p a word but I’d be in business for about 3 weeks).

When we spoke to the MoJ we suggested a neutral vendor model which would allow the best of the existing arrangement to carry on (it was working after all) and introduce innovation over time. Firstly in the booking/payment procedure (some interpreters were even being paid cash in hand) and over time interpreter development based on geographic data (i.e. the total cost to supply the service varies over the country because you are shifting people around). At the moment this data is at best patchy (its worse now as people are ‘on strike’) and no one knows the true total cost to supply a service fit for purpose. So I suggested getting this data and then making decisions.

Instead they created a monopoly.

I have no doubt that the infallible Apple will have a great success with the iPhone 4S. But did they need to do it in Japan by associating the product with your backside? Would they prefer to have done it differently, I would think so. Personally I don't think this will have any long term impact on the Apple brand for all the obvious reasons. Apple brand global awareness is a benchmark for others and has a unique brand identity. But a mistake like this could cripple a lesser brand no matter how good the product. My Japanese colleagues are still chortling when they see Siri. So I have to disagree no matter how good Apples sales my comment is still valid.
p.s. the Guardian article does not mention the sales in Japan and Samsung is litigating against them there so the jury's still out :)

I'm guessing by "less than enthusiastic response to the iPhone 4S" you're referring to the same iPhone4S that is breaking sales records?

Great article! It made me look at this in a whole new way. How do you think the caravan/trailer reference would go over in Canada? And what about Mexico? Just curious.
